ERDI • Public Safety Training

A full face mask is part of a public safety diving system. Divers must be able to use its communications, manage their gas and respond when the mask or supply stops working as expected. ERD Full Face Mask Ops provides structured practice and evaluation for those tasks.

Who this course is for

  • Minimum age 18.
  • ERDI certification or an accepted equivalent appropriate to the course.
  • Current CPR, first aid and oxygen administration qualifications.
  • A suitable full face mask with communications and compatible backup equipment, subject to instructor review.

Course structure

The program includes approximately three hours of academics, confined-water skill development and two open-water training dives. Training includes mask handling, communications and emergency responses. If combined with ERD I, two additional dives are required for the full face mask component.

What you will work on

  • Full face mask preparation, fit, checks and communications.
  • Controlled mask removal, replacement and recovery procedures.
  • Emergency gas responses and transition to backup breathing and mask equipment.
  • Buoyancy, task management and team communications during evaluated dives.

Scope and safety

This is the ERDI public safety Full Face Mask Ops course. SDI recreational Full Face Mask Diver is a separate program. A full face mask alone does not qualify a diver or team for every contaminated-water hazard.
