Florida Fall Diving: Your Wetsuit Changed, So Should Your Weight Check
The most common fall diving problem in Florida is not cold water. It is divers changing exposure protection without checking how that change affects their buoyancy.
During the summer, plenty of Florida divers use a skin, shorty, thin wetsuit or no wetsuit at all. Then fall arrives. The water is still comfortable, but cooler mornings, longer boat rides, and repeated dives make that 3 mm or 5 mm wetsuit look considerably better.
Putting on more wetsuit is easy. Figuring out the correct weight takes a little more thought.
“I wore 8 pounds last time” is not a buoyancy plan. It is a historical reference—and sometimes ancient history.
A Thicker Wetsuit Changes the Entire Dive
Neoprene contains gas bubbles that provide insulation and buoyancy. A thicker wetsuit normally requires more weight at the surface. As the diver descends, the neoprene compresses and loses some of that buoyancy.
That means a diver wearing a thicker suit may be very buoyant at the surface, heavier at depth, and increasingly buoyant again during the ascent.
This is manageable when the diver is properly weighted and paying attention. It becomes a problem when someone guesses at the additional weight, adds six pounds “just to be safe” and heads for the swim platform.
Overweighting does not make a diver safer. It means more air must be added to the BCD at depth to establish neutral buoyancy. That air expands during ascent and must be vented. The more unnecessary air a diver carries, the more work it takes to remain in control.
Divers Alert Network notes that proper weighting helps control ascent rate because a correctly weighted diver does not need to carry as much air in the BCD at depth. DAN also identifies buoyancy problems as a contributing factor in incidents involving rapid ascents, excessive gas use, overexertion and difficulty remaining at the required depth.
In plain English: If you have to turn your BCD into an underwater parade balloon just to get neutral, you are probably carrying too much lead.
“I Always Use 12 Pounds” Is Not a Weighting System
The correct amount of weight is not a permanent number.
It changes with:

Wetsuit thickness and condition
-
Aluminum or steel cylinders
-
Cylinder size
-
BCD and regulator configuration
-
Salt water versus fresh water
-
Additional equipment
-
The amount of gas remaining in the cylinder
-
Changes in the diver’s body composition
Even replacing an old wetsuit with a new suit of the same advertised thickness can change buoyancy. Older neoprene may have permanently compressed over time. That brand-new suit can be noticeably more buoyant than the suit you have worn for the last decade and refuse to retire because “it still works.”
It may still work. It may also be one boat ladder away from becoming a two-piece wetsuit.
At Stuart Scuba, we carry BARE, Hollis, Cressi and Waterproof wetsuits because fit matters as much as the name printed on the sleeve. A properly fitted wetsuit should provide protection without restricting breathing or movement. Different suits use different neoprene, linings, seals and construction, so changing brands or models can change both fit and buoyancy.
If you change your wetsuit, cylinder, BCD or equipment configuration, conduct another buoyancy check. Do not automatically copy the weight used by someone who appears to be your size. Two divers who look almost identical on the boat may require very different amounts of weight.
Salt Water Is Not the Pool
Most of the diving we do from our charter boat, Little Deeper, is saltwater drift diving off Palm Beach County. That matters.
Salt water is more buoyant than fresh water. A diver who is properly weighted in a pool may need additional weight in the ocean. How much depends on the diver and the complete equipment configuration. This is another reason to perform an actual check instead of relying on a number written in an old logbook.
Drift diving adds another operational concern. After entering from Little Deeper, divers need to get together, begin the descent and remain with the dive group and flag. If a diver is substantially underweighted, that diver may still be bouncing around on the surface while the group is beginning its descent.
The answer is not to carry half the Sea Pearls display on your waist.
The answer is to determine the correct weight before the dive, enter ready and use proper descent technique. Exhale, get vertical, vent the BCD completely and check that air is not trapped in an elevated portion of the bladder. Sometimes the “weight problem” is really an air-management or body-position problem.
If you are having trouble descending, signal the crew or divemaster. Do not quietly struggle until the boat, flag and dive group are all headed in different directions.
Proper Weighting Helps During the Entire Drift
A properly weighted diver is generally more comfortable and streamlined. That matters in current.
Poor buoyancy and trim create drag. Drag increases effort, and effort increases gas consumption. DAN warns that current can be physically demanding and can accelerate gas use. Adding unnecessary weight makes the diver carry more air in the BCD, which can increase profile and make buoyancy adjustments more complicated.
Drift diving does not mean we fight the current for an hour. We normally move with it. However, divers still need enough control to maintain position with a buddy, avoid the bottom, complete a safety stop and respond if the situation changes.
When a diver is overweighted, the first half of the dive may feel manageable because the cylinder is still heavy. Near the end of the dive, the cylinder is more buoyant, the diver is shallower and the gas in the BCD and wetsuit is expanding. That is when poor weighting begins collecting its debts.
The safety stop is not where we want to discover that a diver’s weighting system consists of kicking downward and hoping nobody notices.
Hard Weight, Soft Weight and Where It Goes
At Stuart Scuba, we carry Sea Pearls hard and soft weights. Both can work well, but the right choice depends on the diver’s equipment and how the weight will be carried.
Hard weights are compact and fit many standard weight belts and integrated-weight systems. Soft weights conform more naturally to the body and can be more comfortable in pockets. The important questions are not simply hard or soft. They are:

Is the weight secure?

Can it be released if required?
-
Is the diver carrying the correct total amount?

Is the weight distributed to support proper trim?

Does the diver understand how the system releases?
A diver can have the correct total amount of weight and still struggle because it is poorly positioned. Too much weight around the hips with buoyant legs may produce a head-up swimming position. Too much weight placed high may push the diver head-down.
Either position increases drag. It can also leave fins hanging below the diver and contacting the reef.
Move small amounts of weight deliberately. Test the change under controlled conditions and make one adjustment at a time. Throwing weight into every available pocket until the diver sinks is not equipment configuration. It is underwater landscaping.
Before jumping from Little Deeper, make sure integrated-weight pockets are fully locked in place. Check them during the buddy check. A weight pocket falling out during the dive can create an immediate buoyancy problem. It also makes an expensive donation to the ocean, which already has plenty of lead and does not need yours.
Conduct the Check Before It Becomes a Problem
Start the conversation before leaving the dock. Tell the crew, divemaster, instructor or buddy that you changed your exposure protection and may need to confirm your weight.
Use the buoyancy-check procedure taught by your certification agency. Account for the gas that will be used during the dive so you can remain under control near the end with a nearly depleted cylinder. Stuart Scuba divers are expected to return with at least a 500 psi reserve. We do not plan on using every breath in the cylinder just to remain underwater.
Whenever practical, make the first dive with unfamiliar equipment an easy dive under manageable conditions. The middle of a strong current, a deep wreck or a negative entry is a lousy place to discover that the weighting estimate made while eating breakfast was wrong.
Record the final configuration in your logbook:

Whether you could hold the safety stop comfortably

Approximate cylinder pressure during the final check
Writing down “14 pounds” does not help much if you do not also record what you were wearing and whether 14 pounds was actually correct.
Fall Conditions Add Another Consideration
Fall diving in Florida can be excellent, but the season brings changing weather. The first cold fronts can affect wind, sea state and surface temperature even when the water at depth remains relatively warm. Conditions can change quickly, which is why the marine forecast and actual local conditions must be checked before departure.
Exposure protection is not only about the temperature at depth. Consider the entire charter:

The ride offshore

Time spent waiting in wet gear

Two dives instead of one
-
Wind moving across a wet wetsuit
-
The surface interval
-
The ride back to the marina
A diver who becomes chilled may lose dexterity, concentration and comfort. If you are cold, tell the crew or your buddy. Do not try to win an argument with your own nervous system. It has been doing this longer than you have.

Take Ten Minutes and Fix It
Before your first fall dive, inspect your wetsuit and confirm that it still fits properly. Check your BCD inflator, dump valves and integrated-weight pockets. Verify your weight with the cylinder and equipment you will actually use. Practice holding a stop without swimming downward, hanging on the line or inflating your lungs like a distressed pufferfish.
