The USS Muliphen (AKA-61/LKA-61) was an Andromeda-class attack cargo ship that served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1970. After being decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register, she was intentionally sunk as an artificial reef off the coast of Florida on January 21, 1989.

Details about the Muliphen wreck:

  • Location: Off the coast of Fort Pierce, Florida, at 27°24.331′N 80°00.337′W. Some sources also list the location as off Port St. Lucie, Florida.
  • Depth: The main deck lies around 145 feet on the port side and about 160 feet on the starboard side due to a starboard list. The maximum depth around the seafloor is approximately 170 feet, but a trench formed by the ship's collapse can reach depths exceeding 200 feet.
  • Condition: The wreck is largely upright and intact, but was fractured in two by hurricanes in 2004.
  • Diving: It's a popular recreational dive site. Divers can explore the cargo holds and the superstructure.
  • Marine Life: The wreck attracts abundant marine life, including gag grouper, sheepshead, snapper, and spadefish.
  • Current: There is a generally northward-moving current at the wreck site.
  • History: The Muliphen earned two battle stars for her service in World War II. She participated in operations in the Pacific, including Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She also served in the Naval Transportation Service and was involved in operations in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.
