King Neptune

Latitude: 26 42.93' N

Longitude: 080 01.09' W

Part of the Breakers Reef system, King Neptune is a north/south running ledge in 60 feet of water at the sand, 49 feet on top. The statue that gave this site its name, is now gone. For many years, the 7 foot badly eroded statue of King Neptune stood in a sandy break in the reef. The reef edge is about 12' of vertical relief north of the statue's former location, with an enormous undercut nearby. The site boasts lush coral and sponge growth with an enormous fish count. Look under the outcropping for a memorial plaque. But take care, you may find a goliath grouper or a nurse shark under the ledge! The reef fades out to the east, so don’t follow it. Stay north/northwest over the sand and you’ll come to Turtle Mound, just across the sand. Turtle Mound is a good place to spot, what else? Turtles!
